This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The second-grade students at my school are enthusiastic learners who are filled with curiosity.

My students are highly energetic and active learners; they are very motivated by hands-on experiences.

My class is 95% African-American with a majority from low-income families and a few English language learners who learn better with hands-on and real-life experiences in all subject areas. Our school is located in a great neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York.

Our school is a Title I-funded school and only allows a small amount of funding for classroom supplies and trips. It's never enough to cover the needs of our students in the classroom.

My children have amazing abilities, but just don’t have the resources to push their learning to the next level. They come into a classroom with the bare minimum of school supplies and knowledge.

We do our best in order to make sure they achieve their potential. These items will support my second graders with their social emotional development.

My Project

These past two years has been really tough. We all feel it. Even before the pandemic hit, it was important for students to learn how to emotionally regulate themselves and have access to the tools to do so.

With the pandemic still in full swing, it's more important than ever to have tools that support mental health.

In our school community, teachers are trying to create a peace place. I envision an isolated space that students can go to when they feel the need. We would need a comfortable chair, a digital clock, and some sensory toys. We would also need materials to decorate the space such a tie dye tapestry, string lights, and an essential oils diffuser to create an environment that can help students when they are experiencing escalated feelings.

These times are hard for children. I'd like to continue making our classroom a place to learn, grow, and provide emotional support.
