Working in a multi-age classroom in a Title l school, I have an extremely diverse group of scholars. The school itself has over 620 students from countries all over the world. Some of my students are from a high poverty area. The needs of my students range from children at risk (homeless, special needs, medical concerns, etc.) to the high-functioning student.
Because some of my students receive little support from home, our time together at school is essential to helping each child feel loved and excited about learning.
School provides an important experience of safety, love, and learning. Due to the circumstances of many of my children, school is the primary safe, loving, and nurturing outlet to enhance their education and lives.
My Project
Literacy is woven into each part of our school day and is such a critical component to learning. I'm fortunate in that my students loop and stay with me for two years, fostering a strong relationship. I feel confident with the Readers Workshop program that is used school wide in teaching both reading and writing, but I'd love to add an additional layer.
Students who are with me for two years would benefit from having new books to provide additional modeling for both reading and writing skills and strategies.
Our project include both a "writing" read aloud book set as well as a "reading" read aloud book set. In addition to using our current program, students will have additional books at their fingertips to use as resources and spanning more student interests. To effectively introduce these books in alignment with our current program, I've included both the reading and writing teacher's manuals. The manuals also provide more guidance for teachers with using the accompanying student books during whole group, small group, and independent work time.
Providing these tools for my students will enhance student learning by showing a wide range of authors' crafts. I'm excited about sharing all of the items across my grade level and encourage more discussions during our plannings, which will reach more students than just those in my class. Thank you for strengthening our literacy block!
