My school is a microcosm of the racial, cultural, linguistic, socio-economic and family diversity that reflects the larger world.
We have 580 students enrolled in grades K-5 and students speak over 30 different languages. Our school opened in the Fall of 2006 and was built in the middle of a new housing development of homes valued at nearly one million dollars. Even though we are located in an upper middle class development of homes, we serve children from neighboring low-income,Section 8 housing, older, well-established middle class neighborhoods, children from Coast Guard housing, transitional housing for families previously homeless, housing for battered women and their children, and federally-subsidized veteran housing. As you can imagine our students come to school with a range of life experiences and abilities. Our amazing school brings together children from all of these vastly diverse communities into one tightly-knit community of parents, children, and staff.
My Project
I am requesting materials that will directly support a strong reading and writing program for my reading intervention students.
I am requesting several hands-on learning games such as alphabet dice, towers of sight words, and dough mats.
Children learn best by actively participating in fun and engaging literacy activities.
I have also requested teaching manuals that support the Orton-Gillingham remedial reading program that supports struggling readers.
Replacement ink cartridges will enable my students to type their writing and publish it for peer review.
Plastic containers and lids in addition to sand will enable me to create sand trays in which my students can practice letter and word formation using a tactile experience.
The book stand will enable me to display letter and word cards for my students to see during small group table work.
