Our school serves students in grade 6-8 and provides rigorous academics resulting in high performance. Our teachers are committed to collaboration and student-focused, data-driven instruction.
Our students are held to very high expectations and benefit greatly from this accountability.
Our goal is to prepare our students to become life-long learners with 21st century skills that they can summon throughout their lives. Building readers is a huge part of this goal - literacy is a focus in our school and this begins in our school library.
My Project
We had over 60 kids show up for the battle of the books team interest meeting yesterday! Which is exciting BUT we don't have the books for even half that many students. Battle of the Books is an awesome program where students read from a pre-selected list of 22 high quality examples of young adult literature from a variety of genres. The students read these books together as a team and then compete against other schools in the district and region.
The RCMS Battle of the Books team has been district champion for the past 3 years.
In order to give our students the best opportunity to remain highly competitive, we need copies of the books on the reading list. The AIG department only provides our team with one copy of approximately 1/3 of the list each year. We are left to fill in the gaps but have no budget for our library.
With this project, we are hoping to fund 3 copies of each book on the book list. We want our students to be able to choose the books they want to read on the list and not just be stuck with whatever is leftover in our school library. We want them to be able to get their books here in our media center and not struggle to find ways to get them from other sources.
