Building a Spanish Library for a Bilingual Classroom

My Project

I teach a wonderful class of second graders at a very diverse low-income school in Chicago. Almost all of my students are English learners, and about 25% of my students are newcomers who speak almost no English. As a bilingual classroom, some students are learning to read in Spanish, as well as working to maintain biliteracy as their English skills improve.

I believe a large and interesting classroom library can make a huge difference in helping students build a love of reading, but unfortunately the Spanish side of my bilingual classroom library is much smaller than I would like.

It's much harder to find Spanish-language books than English books when looking in used bookstores or getting hand-me-downs from other teachers, so my Spanish classroom library is limited by whatever books I can manage to find or afford to buy myself - which means that it lacks many of the kinds of high-interest books that help my students reading in English build a love of reading. I would love to be able to supplement the Spanish side of my library with some newer, more engaging books to create enthusiastic readers in both languages!
