My students need children's books that teach them important social skills to help them during school and throughout life.

My Students

What I love about my students is how they are constantly pushing me to grow. Some of the normalcies I was blessed with as a child are things my students don't get to experience. My building has a 90% free and reduced lunch population. School is sometimes a refuge for my kids and I strive to make it a calm, safe place for them to be.

I find that my students teach me just as much as I teach them!

In my role as a school counselor, social skills are a focus of a lot of my lessons with my students. I have to remember that it is our role as educators to not only teach these skills to them in a way they understand, but also to model the skills for them.

Despite the challenges that my students face daily, they come to school ready to learn and be loved. Our goal is to make our building feel like a family - and I believe we are succeeding!

My Project

We are constantly focusing on social skills in my building. During whole class lessons, small groups and individual sessions, I'm always trying to find the best way to teach my students how to show appropriate social skills.

It is one thing to tell students how to do these social skills, but they learn and understand much deeper when they can connect the skill to a story.

Currently, I have to build my lessons around the books I have, which unfortunately aren't always applicable to the situations my students face.

Adding these books to my library will help specifically with accepting responsibility, learning to be mindful, having a growth-mindset and self-regulations of actions and emotions - all things my students need!
