Building a School Full of Gardeners

My students need a grow cart to grow a variety of plants.

My Students

Two year ago in a very small inner city school, there was a class of students that decided to create a vegetable garden. They were naturally skeptical, their city not only had limited opportunities to grow fresh produce it did not have a grocery store where that produce would be available.

Through their scientific study of plants they started with a small classroom greenroom, and carefully followed the plant care guidelines they investigated.

The group learned the parts of each plant, and what a plant needs to survive, but mainly that they were capable of creating something that seemed out of reach. After summer vacation when the plants were harvested, they were amazed with what they had done. They were able to enjoy the seeds from their sunflowers, pick and eat the baby corn, tomatoes, and lima beans, and collect the seeds from the one 12 pound pumpkin that they had grown themselves. The efforts of that little first grade group sparked the interest of the entire school. In 2010 the 50 first graders of our school created a Butterfly Garden and Vegetable/Fruit garden. We successfully grew tomatoes, strawberries, swiss chard, broccoli, cabbage, black eyed peas, pole beans, peppers, carrots,in addition to a variety of plants that have attracted dozens of local butterflies

My Project

Our next step is to touch gardeners in the entire school. We will be creating an Outdoor Classroom space with a green house, raised beds, cold frames, and planters full of trees, fruits, vegetables and flowers. In the fall kindergarten will grow their own tree, first grade will grow flowers, second will grow cotton plants, third will create soil through composting and the fourth and fifth graders will grow and donate fruits and vegetables to local food banks and charities. My students need a grow cart to grow a variety of plants. From tree seedlings to fruits and vegetables this cart will be well used!

In a falling city with a heightened dropout rate, it is hard for a child to see their potential for greatness.

Our goal is to equip each child with the education and self confidence needed to not only become successful but to rebuild their city. The gardening skills gained will serve as a valuable tool that our students will have for the rest of their lives.
