Compared to other Indiana schools, our student population is not as diverse, with 80% identifying as Caucasian/White. Our students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Mandarin, Punjabi, and Bengali.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with around 40% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
The general population of the surrounding area classify as middle class.
20% of all students are enrolled in the Gifted & Talented Program, which is larger than the median across all reported middle schools in Indiana (14%).
My Project
The fidgets will help my students reduce heightened stages of negative emotions, such as stress, sadness, fear, or anger. Most students come into my office in an emotional state that interferes with the counseling process, and it is my job to calm them down in order for them to make steps of improvement and get them ready to learn. Without fidgets, it takes longer to eliminate these overwhelming emotions.
The social-emotional learning games are for building relationships in both individual counseling and peer group counseling settings.
Building connections can be difficult - especially in middle school. These games will be used for ice breakers and to bond over similar experiences.
The chalkboard, chalkboard markers, and lamps are for creating a welcoming environment in my office for students to feel comfortable sharing their stories. Chalkboards are fun, interactive tools for adolescents to communicate with each other. The harsh ceiling lights that are installed in my office can be overwhelming; a few lamps create a dim lighting which provide a calming area and limit sensory overload.
Lastly, the greeting cards are to help build relationships among students, teachers, administrators, and parents. I know the importance of a kind note during big "life moments." I want to use this year to increase my intentional acts of kindness with those around me. These can be used to notice the academic growth in students or the teachers that go above and beyond for their students. Taking the time to send these greeting cards throughout the year will help both my personal growth and professional development as a school counselor.
