Building a Safe Environment for Racial and Social Justice Awareness
Help me give my students the opportunity to learn, share, play, discuss, and grow in a safe environment on the topics of race, cultures, and other social justice issues with books and multicultural paper, crayons, and markers.
Our first grade classroom is filled with children excited to learn, who feel safe and welcomed, and know they are loved and valued. The environment that is inside the walls of a classroom directly correlates to the amount of learning that happens.
First grade is a busy time of learning and growing academically, but most importantly socially and emotionally!
We work on learning to read and increase our fluency and comprehension. We practice writing our thoughts in an organized manner on paper. We learn to tell time, fractions, addition and subtraction in math. But we also learn about ourselves and others. We learn how to value ourselves the way we are. We learn how to get along with others. We learn kindness, respect, integrity, and individualism.
My Project
My project is a request for art materials (paper, crayons, and markers) so that my students are not left out when it comes time for personal creations representing themselves. A student shouldn't have to use a substitute color because the tones are not included in a traditional package that can be easily purchased in a store. These items will allow all students to be included equally.
I have also requested a diverse set of small figures that represent multiple people so that students can play and learn with others, with toys that look just like them!
I would also like to be able to purchase lessons and materials to enhance and support my curriculum and instruction with a gift card to Teachers Pay Teachers. I have also selected a set of diverse picture books that have exceptional art and use inventive storytelling - brimming with humor and history, magic and imagination.
