This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My library is full of books for guys. We have a myriad of science fiction, sports, history/war and horror books. Many of the young men can find something they like to read. I need more books my young ladies will enjoy!
My seventh, eighth and ninth grade students are very inquisitive.
There are about twenty students total in each class. Most students are African American. The school they attend is in a large urban city in Indiana, and many of the students receive free and reduced price lunch. They are all very hard workers, and know they deserve the opportunity to attain an excellent education.
My Project
Studies show that students who have developed the habit of reading for pleasure have an easier time in high school and college. It is self evident that doing something for fun cannot be forced; I cannot make a student like a book. I can give them time to read, but I can't make them like what they read.
I am therefore requesting books written specifically for young women to read for pleasure. These books are about subjects in which they are interested - relationships, family and struggles. Your donation will ensure that these young women have the types of books they want to read so that when I give them silent reading time, they will have something they enjoy reading.
The books I am requesting are meant to be read for fun, and I probably will not use them for classroom instruction.
It is imperative that my students read books they enjoy; these are the books many of them have requested. Support this project and help my students develop a surefire indicator of future success - the healthy habit of reading for pleasure!
