I love the school I teach at and the community in which it's located. We're a small high school in Illinois, about 450 students total, and many of our students have grown up together. I teach literally every sophomore in the building, and about a quarter of the freshmen, as well!
Because we're such a small school, my kids are involved in a little bit of everything.
They're scholars, athletes, actors, activists, singers, volunteers, and hard workers. What I've been working toward these past few years is creating a space for "readers" on that list.
My Project
In order to help my students fall in love with reading, I allow them to self-select texts for approximately 75% of the school year. Because our time in the school library is limited, and I know that having access to books is one of the most critical components to building a reading life, I've been working hard to stock my classroom library with high interest books that are contemporary, diverse, and engaging.
The books I've requested will continue to help me match students to books they can fall in love with.
This collection meets the needs of so many different students -- my kids who love musical theater, my kids who love sports, my kids who love gaming, my kids who love LOVE itself! I know that I'll be able to help a reluctant reader see that reading is worthwhile.
