Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Literacy is important in our classroom. Our class spends about 30-45 minutes a day reading independently. We also spend about 5-10 minutes a day writing about our reading in our Reading Journals to track our goals and make note of our connections to the story.

My 23 hardworking third graders attend a low-income school in the Bay Area.

The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch and are English Language Learners. My students range in reading levels, where some are at grade level while are not. However, they all love reading and listening to stories read to them.

My Project

The book bins will tremendously help keep our classroom organized. The individual book bins will help each student keep their books in pristine shape and make it easier for the students to locate their books during Reader's Workshop when students read independently. This is also where students will keep their Reading Journals - where they record what they read, take notes about the books, and make reading goals. The classroom library book bins will be used as storage containers so that students can easily find a book at their reading level when they need a new book to read. Each bin is labeled with a level.

Building a reading life is a huge goal in our classroom this year.

I would like all of my students begin or continue loving to read books. This involves reading many books and keeping track of their reading. The book bins will help organize and keep the books in great condition so that the books can be enjoyed by everyone in the classroom for the whole school year!
