This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach freshman English in a very diverse school - racially, culturally and economically diverse. My students come from a very wide range of backgrounds and ability levels. Once they come to high school, it is a challenge to keep them motivated towards reading.
My students are reading-shy, and are often unenthusiastic to undertake what they consider a chore.
However, here at our school we want every student to be college or career ready by the time they graduate. I can help them with that by building up their reading abilities and stamina. I want them to value reading, and to learn that it is not something to be dreaded or feared. That it has worth, and that it can be fun.
My Project
One of the challenges I face in motivating my students towards reading is that they don’t always see themselves represented. It is a goal of mine to provide them with increased diversity in my classroom library, so they can better see themselves reflected in their reading choices. I’m also including graphic novels so to help motivate my more reluctant readers to choose to read. Reading should be joyful! I hope to inspire more love of reading in my students by having a greater diversity in providing more options from which they may choose.
