I teach third grade at a suburban school in Oklahoma. My students come from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. They are a diverse and unique bunch. Each day, we strive to do the very best we can. We are a Title I school, and a large percentage of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
Our school is a learning community.
We try to meet the needs of every student and challenge them to set and reach goals each and every day.
My Project
Students are bringing adverse experiences with them into the classroom. We are becoming more and more aware of how trauma can effect a student's education.
I am requesting picture books to help me teach mindfulness, social-emotional learning, and coping strategies to my students.
It is so important that we discuss things like feelings and self-regulation in today's schools. Students are stressed and over-stimulated. Many of them lack skills to regulate their behavior and emotions. My goal is to help them through these difficult times and teach them coping skills for when they are feeling overwhelmed. Picture books speak to kids. They are in their language. These books will be great tools when addressing the emotional needs of my students.
