My students are curious, ask great questions, and have varied learning needs. Each child is unique with specific strengths and needs in order to be successful. Some require concrete materials, resources, scaffolding, and many opportunities to practice. These daily foundational skills and activities help them develop flexibility with numbers which helps them to better understand math lessons being taught.
My students love to learn, build upon, and strengthen math concepts and skills.
Dynamic, hands-on activities makes learning accessible for all students. Research has shown that students retain more information when learning is presented in a way that is fun and engaging. Using a wide variety of models or math manipulatives (number bonds, ten frames, counters, number lines, rekenreks) helps them better conceptualize concepts that are being taught, while also giving them time to learn these concepts at their pace.
I also love opportunities to blend reading and math together. Using literature as a starting point to learn a new concept is the perfect opportunity to grab their attention.
My Project
The books I have selected are high quality literature choices which will be used to introduce new math concepts. More importantly, they touch upon social/emotional topics, cultural themes or share rich traditions from around the world.
Reading aloud quality literature to students is what connects us, opens our minds to other people, their culture and helps us see that we are more alike than we are different.
Listening to a read aloud is like a universal language that everyone understands, and it is the perfect segue to introduce new math concepts to my students.
