Something I love about my second graders is their desire to learn and grow! They have different personalities, interests and they all learn at different academic levels. Although they are all unique and individual, they each bring something important to our classroom community and team. Despite their differences, they all share a love of learning and are ready to support each other personally and academically. I love reading and want to pass that love of books on to my students, so our classroom is filled with both fiction and non-fiction books.
In order to create this love of books, students must have access to books that interest them and are on their “reading level”.
Books on their level allow them to be able to read fluently, comprehend what they are reading and learn reading skills, strategies and life lessons from the text. With access to a variety of books, my students will be more able to read to one another, to themselves and most importantly, they will have more opportunities to grow as readers.
My Project
Books are such a blessing for a classroom, especially for a classroom with a diverse range of reading levels. My hope is that the more students read on their reading levels, the more they will grow as readers. Having taught both first and third grade in previous years, I am working on adding books to our ever-growing library to meet the reading level of all students.
Some of my students are already independent readers who love picture books along with more challenging chapter books.
Other students enjoy leveled readers and picture books, but are not quite ready for chapter books. Scholastic has created the Branches series to help with this transition to chapter books. The Branches series has easy-to-read appropriate text, high interest topics and lots of pictures. I would love to add to the Branches series I have started in our classroom and also grow some higher level series that the students are currently enjoying.
With your help, we can provide my students more books to explore and read. With appropriate books, we will help them become more confident in their reading abilities.
