Who among us has not known the great pleasure of getting lost in a book? Of all the skills and traits I hope to impart on my students, a love of reading is the greatest of them all.
Our school is a high poverty school in an urban district.
The overwhelming majority of students in my class are English Language Learners (ELL students). As eight year-olds, they are just beginning to find books and series of books in which they are interested.
My Project
I am requesting 1 document camera, 1 set of floor pillows, and 1 fan.
Historically, these students have gotten by with very little. Resources are limited in our district and in our building so funds are typically not available for any "extras." I would love to provide for these children a comfortable place to read and get lost in a book. Our gathering space is currently lacking in some creature comforts, like cushions to flop on and escape into a story. With a document camera, we can all read and see the full pages of our picture books at the same time. My students will learn to make reading a habit, something they do for pleasure, not an uncomfortable task.
When students learn that reading and sharing literature is in fact a pleasurable activity, they will be more invested and more likely to read outside of school.
This equipment will help to foster a love of reading and literature.
