Help me give my students a positive reading experience. I want them to be able to read comfortably in relaxing rocking chairs and bean bags. Being comfortable while reading is essential.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is an urban high school that is very diverse. I have found that the community is very supportive of our work at the school. Our students are kind and enthusiastic. My developmental reading students have been selected specifically by teachers for their positive attitudes and their interest in improving their skills. Every single kid is a fantastic person with unlimited potential.
My Developmental Reading class is a class that supports tenth graders in their endeavor to become better and stronger readers.
We read every single class day for more than 30 minutes. Students take time to find a book that they enjoy and kick back to engage with it. It is important for students to learn to love reading and to find it enjoyable. Our hope is that through reading and reading activities, students will be able to increase their lexiles by several grade levels by the end of the year. My individual goal is encourage a true love and respect for reading in each of the children in my room.
My Project
All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind-I want to put books in their hands that are relevant to their lives. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. Several of my students need headphones to listen to their book on audio as they read along.
My students also need high-interest, drama-filled, fun and engaging books to hook them into reading.
These comfortable chairs and engaging books can help to increase buy-in. Our goal is to help students increase their reading levels by several grade levels. Reading well improves a student's chances for academic success and success in life.
