This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember getting hooked on a series of books as a child? Think of the anticipation and excitement you felt waiting for & then FINALLY reading the prized next installment in your favorite series. My first grade students share that excitement & joy of finding & devouring books in their favorite series. They are inquisitive, voracious readers who are craving to discover the newest adventures & learn more about the world in their favorite book series.
My students are book-loving, avid readers, & enthusiastic learners, but often do not have access to quality reading materials.
As students who live in a low income area, books are so important to my students & are truly valued. I am a first grade teacher at a Title 1 school in Duluth, GA. Our classroom library is an essential resource for my students. Many of them do not have access to books at home or a nearby public library branch & rely on our school & classroom libraries to check out high-quality books. They check out one book a week from the school library, so our classroom library gives them constant access to great books on their reading level and lots of topics.
My Project
Research shows that most classroom libraries do not have books that are accessible for beginning readers to use to guide them along their successful reading journey. This leads to frustration and feeling like a failure before they have even really started to read. While I do have a wide variety of book topics, many of them are too difficult for my beginning readers to read independently. This project will help me change all that.
Not only will my students be able to read books on their reading level, they will also be able to read books independently to learn more about the topics we are studying in first grade, such as living things, weather, and sound.
The sense of accomplishment and knowledge gained will propel my students to read more and more. My goal is to foster my students' natural love of reading and learning by helping them feel successful as they move along their journey of becoming great readers!
