Our class is full of eager, little learners from various backgrounds. Our school is Title I and offers completely free breakfast and lunch for all students. There are a large number of students in our school who rely on the backpack program for food. There is a high mobility rate in our area due to migrant work and homelessness. Our community is in a rural part of the county, which limits our families' access to resources.
Our students are a creative bunch who want to experiment, create, and learn as much as they can.
They love challenges and exceeding expectations. They set goals for themselves in all areas of learning. Growth mindset is a big part of our class academically and socially.
My Project
Every time a Scholastic Book Order comes in the mail it brings a sense of excitement and curiosity. Many kids wonder who is getting books, what books were ordered, and will they get to read them. Other kids know they will never be the lucky one to be receiving the books. I want to change that and give every child the gift of books.
My project is to allow my students in my class to order their own books from Scholastic every month and special times throughout the year.
Each student will get an order form and time to shop and place their own order for their chosen book. They will each get 9 books during the school year, 1 per month. They will be able to take their books home to create their own libraries. While building their own libraries, I hope to build a love of reading in each of my students.
Many of our students are not able to shop for themselves unless it's a special occasion or for necessities. There are limited shopping options in our rural town, and many families are unable to travel to nearby towns. These factors are especially impacting our homeless students. Not only do they not have the means to travel or shop, but many have misplaced or lost their belongings behind during their moves. Being able to complete this project will level the playing field, and offer all my students the chance to shop for books to keep.
This year with some students distance learning, being able to provide students with books in their levels and interest is more important than ever. These are books that kids can use to take AR quizzes to keep up with in-school kids, as well as keep building a love of reading while home.
