Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Reading Recovery teacher that supports Kindergarten, First and Second grade classrooms. I am primarily focusing on getting big books into our kindergarten classrooms. When I push into these classrooms, I have noticed a need to provide rich literature in our kindergarten classrooms since so many of our students come into kindergarten with very little exposure to books. With the program that we use, our teachers have to try to find big books on their own which is not easy. It would be nice to have their own big book library
With big books, we can create rich print environments for our students.
Having these books easily accessible for our teachers and students can create that love of reading for our students.
My Project
Shared reading is such a vital part of kindergarten! This is where we as teachers can not only teach a child how to read but also build their love of reading by making it fun and easy! When students feel confident about their reading, they will want to read more and eventually begin to challenge themselves with their reading. With big books, the whole class is exposed to the text clearly and can take part in reading the book with the teacher. During stations, the students can grab these big books that they are familiar with and reread them on their own or with a partner to continue building their reading skills and passion.
