My Students
My kindergartners always walk in with a smile on their faces ready to learn. They always strive for academic readiness no matter what the situation is. Recently many of our students have been affected by Hurricane Harvey and are struggling emotionally and financially due to being displaced. My students come from a very low socio-economic area, with very little resources to engage them in learning. I want to build a stress free foundation in my classroom, so when they leave my classroom they are motivated and excited about learning. I want them to carry the passion of learning with them forever. Your support and generosity is greatly appreciated.
The students that make up my classroom are 99% low income and at risk for dropping out before finishing high-school.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey is not going to stop us from learning. Literacy is everything and books influence and build literacy skills. Many of my students first encounter with books and early literary takes place in first grade. It is important that our classroom is equipped with age appropriate reading material, and literacy activities that allow students to learn while building reading and literacy skills. These new items will allow my students to engage in reading and literacy activities, for example shared reading, individual reading, shopping for the perfect just right leveled books and enhance classroom discussions. In addition to leveled readers, additional items are need to enhance reading and comprehension. Magnetic Blends and digraphs word building boards will assist students with decoding words and blending. Reading phones allow students to hear themselves reading and develop skills that will assist them as they become fluent lifelong readers and learners. Literacy puzzles and word family quiz cards will aid with phonemic awareness skills, for example rhyming, alliteration, and phonics.
