I have 25 sweet first-grade students next year. I will be looping and will begin by teaching Kindergarten and stay with them through First grade. My students are kindhearted and loving kids. They are also extremely hard working. They come to school each and every day ready to learn and with a smile on their face, as do I! Our school day can feel very long when you are only 6/7 years old, but these kids of mine soar through the day. They complete phonics, guided reading, math, writing, science, social studies, go to specials, lunch, recess, and still have energy to spare. They amaze me.
Unfortunately, our school is located within a high poverty district and many of my students do not have the resources that they need at their fingertips.
I do not want them to feel as though they deserve less than other districts may have. I want to ensure that they are set up for success.
My Project
Next year is the year that I transition from teaching First grade to Kindergarten. I will be looping. I will start in Kindergarten with my class and continue with them through First grade. I will be building a love for reading and then shaping them into independent readers.
Children need books that are on their guided reading level so that they can be successful when independently reading.
I need to build a library that is appropriate to the Kindergarten level and provide them with books that they can master all on their own. Currently, I have a library filled with First grade reading material. I want to bring in more lower levels texts that are grade level. I would also like to add the carpet to their reading nook.
