I have taught several different grade levels during my career. Each grade is unique and interesting, but I feel that third grade is one of the most challenging for both teachers and students. This is my second year teaching third grade, and I am desperately trying to find new ways to teach reading and writing. I want my students to be excited and motivated to reach new levels in their literacy skills. I teach in a county with high unemployment and a school with a free and reduced lunch rate of almost 80%. New materials and resources are limited even though our district tries very hard to meet our needs. There are Instant Literacy Centers which help children build sentences, paragraphs and stories. These centers include activity cards, self checking activity cards, fun to use spinners, sentence strips, and writing mats. I feel that this would be a great way to enhance learning of this very important skill while making it enjoyable for the students. Students may work with partners or in small groups in these centers, and that often provides a great learning environment. The centers are ready made, which is a tremendous help for teachers who have very little extra time for preparation. Reading and writing are vital for educational success. I have students who are working at first and second grade levels, but they are expected to meet third grade standards. I need to do all that I can to help them with this endeavor, and I feel that these literacy centers would be a giant step in the right direction.
