Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a diverse community where many languages are spoken and students are eager to learn and participate. Our school serves about 450 students and it is 77% free and reduced priced lunch. I work closely with families to build relationships and ensure we collaborate in building a caring community. Acquiring resources for teaching is crucial in student engagement and developing their desire to learn.
My 5th graders are about to begin a year in which they will learn to take charge of their lives and develop as resourceful learners.
The books they read will help develop interpretation skills and help them make sense of their lives. They will embark in a journey as a community and support each other in learning about themselves and each other. My students will engage in lively classroom discussions, reflect on learning, and share the life lessons from their books.
My Project
Access to books that are comprehensible is a right I believe all of my students should have. This set of books will be the beginning of building a classroom library that has high interest books for my readers of Spanish.
Their love for reading will be further enhanced by having access to resources in their first language.
Books at the right reading level will help them grow and practice the reading strategies they learn every day. The books selected are some of the titles they see their peers read in English. Having access to the same in Spanish helps them feel included in our 5th grade community.
