Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of the ninth grade students that come into my classroom read below grade level. Many of these students do not read often or consistently, but they are willing to read given the right book is available. They need to have access to a variety of books, non-fiction and fiction, from which they can personally explore and choose.
Many of my students may become the first generation of their family to attend college, and their experiences with reading can help them get there.
Our high school exists to serve communities by partnering with parents to educate their children to a level of proficiency and to help them attend college or be ready for a career so that they may return to their communities and contribute effectively to their communities' improvement for generations to come.
Currently, more than half of the students at our school come from low-income households. We need more resources to meet their educational needs.
My Project
Last year, I received help from family, friends, and other supporters to begin building a library for my Textual Analysis and Creative Writing students. Many of my students selected books to read from the shelf. I want to continue that trend by providing more books this year with your generous help. I have added more nonfiction and stories based on true events as well as fiction that could appeal to my students.
My goal is for students to find a book of interest that they will read in its entirety, independently.
They will also be using these books for analysis that is connected to our in-class studies. For example, last year I used You Don't Have to Say You Love Me excerpts to teach memoir craft. Also, by making books such as Long Way Down available, I could appeal to students who like eventful books in my Textual Analysis ninth grade class. The book takes place in 60 seconds. The main character must decide whether or not to take revenge on the person who killed his brother. Please consider helping me provide much needed resources to my students so that they may improve in their reading.
