I have 21 students who are all-around adorable, and each individual has really added their own flare into the makeup of our little "firstie" family! I have a handful of students who receive support from EIP (early intervention program). Eight of my students are enrolled in ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages). Out of the 21 students I teach, two of those friends have some behaviors that we are trying to control and overcome. I love my littles and just want them to understand that I am not just worried about their performance academically, but I want them to be better citizens and understand that it is extremely important to help others in need.
My goal is not just to create great test-takers, my goal is to mold students into considerate, knowledgeable, hard-working, citizens in our classroom community.
My first-grade friends are told consistently how much I just want them to try. It is not always about getting it right, it is about getting better each time they work on the same skill. They know, without a doubt, they are loved and that I want them to be good citizens, not just smarter kids.
My Project
I am looking to get some of the Scholastic Leveled Reader book sets for my classroom because at the beginning of the year students are expected to be at a level C or D. Right now, most of my class is reading at a level B.
Leveled readers are crucial to a well-oiled readers workshop.
I have a leveled library already, but my reading options are mostly for students at level E or above. These books will give my struggling readers the opportunity to put a book in their hands that they can actually apply their reading strategies and decoding skills.
