This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach First Grade at a historically underserved and culturally diverse PK-5 school nestled in Northeast Portland. We are an International Baccalaureate (IB) and Mandarin Immersion school with many diverse learning opportunities for our students. It is this diversity that makes our school such a vibrant place for learning.
My students are curious, creative, and eager to learn.
They come from different backgrounds and welcome everyone into our community. They support, encourage, and challenge each other daily. They’re full of questions about the world and stories to tell from their own personal experiences.
Their love for learning can be seen as they set goals for themselves and persevere through challenging tasks.
My Project
First grade is a time for building strong reading habits and fostering a love of reading through choice and exploring many types of books. In a typical classroom setting, each student should be able to keep 10 - 12 books at their reading level inside their book bag, so they can build their stamina and have a wide selection of books to choose from.
However, the problem we face is that our district is doing distance learning until at least the end of January.
Because of this, many of my students do not have enough books at varying levels in their homes to find "just-right" books at their current levels to keep them engaged and growing as readers.
These leveled readers will allow my students a variety of reading options to choose from at home that will push them to the next level, more high-interest selections to add to their at-home book bags and help boost their confidence. Thank you for supporting this project!
