Help me give my students resources to practice various phonics skills that help develop the foundation for reading. This includes Phonics Flip Books, Phonics Instant Learning Centers, and other items.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, our students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. In addition to those challenges, my students are 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders diagnosed with Intellectual Disabilities. Children diagnosed with an Intellectual disability have a below-average cognitive ability, Intelligent quotient (or I.Q.) is between 70-75 or below, and significant limitations in adaptive behaviors (the ability to adapt and carry on everyday life activities such as self-care, socializing, communicating, etc.)
All of my students perform significantly below grade level, but are growing daily with hard work and positive attitudes.
Our work focuses on strengthening their reading, writing, mathematics, and social skills.
My Project
Phonics instruction is explicit; children are directly and clearly taught about relationships between letters and sounds. Phonics reading will help children to recognize and associate sounds of the letters of the alphabet in the word they read. This will help them to improve in their reading skills and efficiency.
These resources will provide my students with opportunities to practice and apply their learnings in a variety of ways, including manipulating letters to build words and applying phonics skills to decodable texts and to writing.
Because the students in my class are performing at instructional levels that range from Kindergarten to 3rd grade, we often have multiple activities occurring simultaneously. The Phonics Instant Learning Centers, Comprehension Games, and additional resources I am requesting will allow students to continue to be actively engaged in learning, at times when I am not able to work directly with them.
