My students need a variety of flexible seating options like balance balls, stools, pillows and inflatable chairs for comfort in the classroom while independently working, reading and creating a classroom community.
My students are kind, caring and engaged individuals. My students work hard to create special relationships with each person in our classroom every day. My students are eager to learn and try new things. We are always looking for new ways to learn and develop.
In my class, we have built a community that respects each other and works together in positive ways.
This can be a challenge, but my students see the positive outcome that comes from being kind to others. My students care about our school and take care of the materials that they are offered.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the best choice for their own learning. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Comfort drives the learning in classrooms and I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating.
I think of home life and us as adults and we get to choose where we would like to sit when we learn; shouldn't students have that same choice?
Giving my students an opportunity to choose a balance ball or a stool at a low table or a beanless bag inflatable chair at a coffee table makes for a much more flexible learning environment. Having options of floor pillows and glow stools makes for a more "home-like" feel. Having these options in my classroom would help my students to focus and be more engaged in their learning. Group work, projects and reading are more engaging when my students have their choice of seating. I want my students to have the best opportunity to learn and feel comfortable while doing so.
