My students need a diverse collection of listening center books such as: Three Little Bears, Goodnight Moon, Inch by Inch and a carryall to organize writing materials.
Do you remember the joy of having a book read to you? My students don't always get read to at home and most are learning English. With the addition of these diverse and interesting audio books, my students will have the opportunity to listen to many different stories.
Our urban school is in a high poverty area and serves many low income families and students who are English language learners.
The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and 85% of them qualify for free/reduced school lunch. My energetic, diverse class of Kindergarteners represent a plethora of cultures and linguistic backgrounds. Thirty-six percent of my students are African- American, 17% of my students are Latino, 17% are Vietnamese, 17% are Arabic, 2% are Chinese, and 2% are Japanese/Filipino. More than 60% of my class speaks more than one language at home and are learning to speak or are practicing English.
My Project
The listening center books will give my students the opportunity to explore their feelings through stories like: Wemberly Worried and When Sophie Gets Angry. They will be welcomed into the world of science, plants, and nature in stories like: Planting a Rainbow and Inch by Inch. They will delve into the classic fairytale world of: The Gingerbread Boy and The Three Little Bears. They will be counting and learning their alphabets when they listen to Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. They will write and draw with materials organized in our new classroom carryall.
My students will have the essential tools to guide them in their listening skills, independence, critical thinking, as well as opening their minds to the world of possibilities and subjects in these stories.
They will learn to predict the stories, get acquainted with new characters, genres, and give them the stepping stones to learning how to read, listen, and sing songs. Introducing the joy of reading is truly one of the stepping stones to becoming a good reader and writer.
