This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Each morning I walk into a classroom full of students who welcome me with hugs and cheers. My students are kind, caring, thoughtful, and supportive of each other. We are Bucket Fillers! Each one of them are willing and eager to learn. They truly understand that effective effort leads to achievement. My school is on the outskirts of DC and has a strong ESOL population. Even with language barriers and cultural difference, we are able to dig deep into rigorous curriculum with rich discussion.
A lot of the students in my classroom come from all over the world for the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.
Not only for themselves but for their families. The vision of my classroom is to ensure each student is given every opportunity possible to reach their full potential. Each afternoon my students leave my classroom with new knowledge and curiosities about the world around them. These students are our future and they deserve the best education our public school can offer.
My Project
I want to create a classroom library that represents the different cultures in my classroom. I teach in a county that is represented with students from more than 164 countries speaking 184 languages, and the library that they read from everyday should mirror that. When selecting these books I had all of those students in mind.
My students deserve to fall in love with reading through characters and events that represent them and their cultures.
Reading takes us on a journey, helps us solve our own problems, and teaches us important life lessons. If every book character looks like their teacher but not like them, how are they going to imagine themselves in the stories? It is so important to me that I show my students their potential in this world, and giving them characters to aspire to be makes that job so much easier. Please help me create a realness to my amazing students dreams!
