This group of amazing students have taken true initiative with the limited access to materials they have had. In the first few weeks of class, I gave them a box with over 100 pieces of hardware to construct a robot. Within four days between my two AP computer science classes, our robot "Reggie" was built. In addition, some of the young women on their own time built "Arnold", from the left-over parts of Reggie. Madison, Megan, and Makensey are some of the names of the students who are attempting to reach their potential despite our financial limitations.
These students have taken initiative to assign class officers and project managers. They have organized many different projects and placed themselves in leadership positions that allow them to learn how to communicate and work independently. Through this class project students are not only learning hands-on course work, but also real-world life skills.
Through this project, these students will learn how to put a computer together and how differentiating parts interact as a whole. These parts include a motherboard, RAM, power supply, a tempered glass case, and storage. Every part that we have requested is crucial for building a computer. By having these materials, the students will be able to learn how to use problem-solving skills and critical thinking to troubleshoot issues during the building and installation process. Furthermore, they will learn how to work as a team and put all of their unique gifts and talents together toward a common goal. Overall, this project will be very beneficial for the problem-solvers.
In Their Own Words
We hope to get hands-on experience with computers and advance our knowledge on programming and understand the basic fundamentals of computers. We also hope to find satisfaction in completing this project ourselves and learning how to work and communicate as a group. In addition, our goal is to use this learning experience to guide us into career paths that truly make a difference.
We will have a few experienced students taking charge of the project and guide the other students in building this computer, as a few have previous experience and prior knowledge on the process. We aspire to educate our fellow students in the process of building a computer from the ground up.
This project is important to our Computer Science class because this is Gardendale High's first ever Computer Science and we would like to set a high standard for future classes. We hope to advance the technology of our school by learning the inner workings thoroughly and thus able ourselves to make educated recommendations for our school's future students benefit.
