My students need a rug for our morning meeting, and they need books and posters relating to character development that will help them learn ways to appropriately express feelings/emotions.

Use words, not violence! Please help me be the positive voice of change for my 2nd grade students! Many students do not possess the verbal and social skills necessary to solve problems and express emotions in an appropriate way. We need to help our youth and change their way of thinking.
I teach 32 amazingly energetic students!
They come to class each day with a desire and eagerness to learn. My students live in an African American community on the west side of Chicago that has a reputation for drugs, gangs, and violence. They frequently witness behaviors that are inappropriate. Many of my students, despite their enthusiasm for learning, do not possess the social and verbal skills necessary to clearly express emotions, thoughts, and feelings. They are quick to react with name calling or hitting. This is definitely a problem that needs to be addressed. Providing my students with the words and problem solving skills to deal with "life" is my mission. This is important for the ongoing success of the learning community in 2nd grade and also their future success in life.
These books and posters will help us during our morning meetings. They provide the words and corresponding expressions that will give my students the common language they need to express themselves appropriately. I need to give my students the opportunity to see, and practice these words and expressions in order for them to have the tools they need to survive. The beautiful rug will be the inviting meeting place where children will feel safe to use and practice these skills. If they are not getting these lessons at home, where else will they learn these skills other than school? Many of my students have younger siblings as well. I will challenge my students to teach and demonstrate to these siblings how to use words as tools for success.
Please help me provide my students with the life long tools that they will need to effectively communicate with each other and throughout society.
Too many of our youth are being injured or killed because they are not able to express emotions and communicate, and are not able to problem solve appropriately with each other. Addressing these issues in the younger grades makes me believe that my students will some day remember our lessons and avoid a fate that is unthinkable to me. Please help!
