My students need these books, bracelets, and squish-eez for Morning Meeting within my classroom to help with creating a positive school culture as well as creating mindfulness within all of students in my classroom.
I currently teach in a Title I school. It is my job to reach all of my students and turn them into lifelong learners and teach them life skills. I have twenty students who are eager to learn. I have three students who receive resource and two students who are currently in an RTI Pullout Program. I have several students who are reading and writing below grade level and then I have several students functioning high on a third-grade level. I love to instill in my students the importance of life skills and being able to collaborate.
Students lack social skills, which leads to a continual increase of behavior and social conflicts, which interrupts instructional time.
My Project
According to Responsive Classroom training, the goal of the four components (greeting, sharing, activity/game, and message) is to "set the tone for respectful learning, establish a climate of trust, motivate students to feel significant, create empathy and encourage collaboration, and support social, emotional, and academic learning." I want to build my classroom and school culture and by incorporating Morning Meeting, this will help my class learn these necessary skills. I am requesting colored bracelets, so that when the students enter the classroom they can choose the bracelet matched to their feelings for that morning. It will help me understand how their morning started.
The definition of mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.
During greeting time, students would be able to practice respectful, healthy communication skills all while starting the day on a positive note. They learn about eye contact while speaking to someone, clear speaking voice, stating other students names before greeting them, smiling, and learn about safe and appropriate touching. I am requesting squish-eez to help with anxiety that comes along with having to communicate. The would be able to hold and squeeze one while talking.
For sharing time, this allows for building confidence, and allows the students to feel valued. It also allows them to learn how to communicate effectively. This allows all students to listen and respond respectively and appropriately.
The game/activity part is their favorite part! This part is intended to introduce, practice, and establish classroom community of trust and respect. During this time students gain self discipline, confidence, communication and social skills.
