My young artists come to my room eager to learn and share their talent and creativity. Some of them at the beginning of the school year are a little reluctant to "dare" to create different and new things. Once they realize that in the Art room everything is possible, they turn into awesome artists.
I teach Art to almost 800 hundred Elementary students from Kindergarten to 5th Grade.
They attend a school where you feel a great sense of community. It is an old school with lots of traditions. Older kids always come back to visit our school. My students are very talented artists and hard workers who love to share with me and the whole classroom their new ideas. They are always eager to learn new concepts, artists and Art history. Every day they surprise me with their creativity and their many solutions to the challenges they encounter in their projects. I am so fortunate to be their Art teacher!
My Project
In order to create a "Community of Artists" and give the best environment possible to my students, we need something very simple but very important to start our day: We need an area rug! Every day 150 kids come to my room. The first thing we do as a group is to sit in an area rug where we share our ideas. This is the moment where I get to know my students and hear all kind of stories. I learn a lot from them during these first minutes of the lesson!
We use this area as a reading area also. My students love to go there and read books when they finish a project.
We need a good quality area rug, a place where they feel comfortable to start our lesson. What we have is not bad, but it is not a very good quality rug. It is getting very old and soon we will need a new one!
Having an area with a good quality rug will make a difference in the way my students start their art lesson.
We share the first minutes of our period in this area. Here their first thoughts and ideas start developing before they go to work. A good quality area rug will support us in our plan of creating a "Community of Awesome Artists!
