This is a 5th grade classroom filled with a diverse group of learners. Each one of my students is eager to learn, regardless of their challenges. Though a lot of them come from low-income homes, broken homes, and have a lot of anxieties, they are still thrilled to be at school and are willing to apply their whole selves to learning. In my room, there are a lot of students who are overanxious, overstimulated, and overwhelmed. They need more hands-on,sensory-based learning experiences and need to be able to apply their over-activeness in a way that still stimulates their brains. This will allow them to shine and share the wonderful characteristics that may still be hidden.
My Project
I am honored to be looping with my class to 5th grade. The students are hardworking and solution-driven. At the end of last year, they requested additional STEM activities for their morning choice work. Morning choice is 30 minutes of collaborative work time, using hands-on materials, that encourage open creativity. This allows the students to start their day on a positive note, feeling as if they've accomplished something within the first few minutes of school.
I would love to fulfill their requests of circuit boards, bridge structures, Sphero programmable robots, and K’nex building sets.
These materials will provide them with an opportunity for additional engineering and computer programming activities.
In addition, the metal stools will give students an opportunity to be mobile throughout the stations. In my room, the students strive off of collaborative communities and enjoy analyzing and creating solutions to real-world tasks. Because of this, I chose specific activities that would engage diverse learners and allow for additional team building skills, while increasing individual self-esteem.
