Sophomore social studies is a heterogenous group of 10th grade students with a wide variety of interests and skill levels. Some students are preparing for an Advanced Placement track of courses in their junior and senior years, others are looking forward to entering a technical training program to finish out high school, and some are working towards filling existing skill gaps in reading and writing. These differences are what make my students a dynamic group of learners, and their variety of needs enables us to focus on building empathy and compassion for others.
While their academic needs vary greatly, what my students have in common is that they care about their community, want to help others, and are overall caring individuals.
They have an idea of who they are as learners, and are ready to advocate for themselves. Our community values communication as a core life skill, and students are continually working towards developing that skill in the classroom.
My Project
Students repeatedly cite furniture and seating as an essential piece of what makes them feel comfortable and ready to learn at school, and yet, the majority of classrooms still rely on uncomfortable tables and desks. As adults, we know that we are more attentive and productive when we're comfortable physically, and when we feel emotionally at ease, so why wouldn't our students want the same?
For many students, school is a safer place than home, and we can help students who are suffering from trauma by making the classroom as comfortable and welcoming as possible.
Seating is an essential part of creating a welcoming classroom. Students are visibly excited to come into a room when flexible seating like beanbag chairs, couches, or office chairs are available. Encouraging positive attitudes is one piece of developing a healthy classroom culture, and offering flexible seating is an easy way to show students that we care about their comfort. When students feel safe and welcome, they are ready to learn and can be their best selves.
