Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are Third grade ESL students, many of whom are from low-income families. They are a very diverse group of students; representing a number of different countries and languages. Many of them are brand new to the country and they are all working on developing their English language abilities.
These students will have a variety of needs and they will represent a wide range of abilities and skills.
They will need a lot of strategic instruction delivered in small group format in addition to whole group, partner work, and group work format.
My Project
As a teacher, my number one goal and best thing I think I can do for my students is teach them a love of reading. This is particularly important for ELLs that enter school in America and have a lot of catching up to do to get to grade level. In order to do this, children need to have access to many different kinds of books about a wide variety of topics, genres, and they need to see a reflection of themselves in the characters. I had a specific reason for requesting each of the books I have requested. Some of them I picked because they help kindness and respect for others, some I picked because they will be a great read aloud for my writing lessons to teach various writing skills, some of them are books on CD for my newcomers to enjoy being read to, and some of them are just books I think my students will gravitate to; in many cases, because the characters look like them! I also asked for some book bins to help keep these new books nice and organized in my classroom library. My library is my favorite place in the classroom, and I take great pride in it. It is very organized and provides so many opportunities for children to select a book from a topic, author, or genre they're interested in, enjoy the book, and return it to the correct place. Of course, buying the books AND all the materials to keep the books organized is expensive and I could use some help!
