My students need books. They need books that will transport them into their imaginations and allow them to explore themes and characters that both resonate with them AND expose them to new places and ideas.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious beings. They are eager to take in the world around them, but their resources are limited. Our school's minority enrollment is 99% and many of our students are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. In addition, many of them are faced with difficult challenges both in and out of the classroom, but every day, I see them rise to the challenge of expanding their horizons and reaching far beyond the metaphorical barriers around them. These students inspire me to think bigger and do better, and I want to give them every opportunity I possibly can to prepare them for the bright future that awaits them.
My Project
Stephen King once said, "Books are a uniquely portable magic."
By the time students reach high school, their love of reading has faded into the background.
Social media is now their choice of entertainment, and the art of discovery and imagination is often cast aside. For many of my students, their love for reading also dwindles because their access to books is limited, thus, limiting their imaginations and wonderment.
My goal is to build a classroom library that encompasses a variety of genres, authors, and stories. I want my students to meet fictional characters whose stories mirror their own. I want them to share experiences with these characters and find commonalities between their lives. I want my students to also go into uncharted territory by using books as their vehicle. I want them to wonder, be curious, explore, and discover through storytelling. I want them to love reading again. I want them to feel the magic that only a good book can create.
