My students need books to read independently during self-selected reading time. This will begin to build my classroom library to offer choices for my students to read.
Our classroom is moving to a balanced literacy program. My students spend 90 minutes of their day in a reading block. During that time the students have time to read independently, they meet with me in small groups, they read with partners, they have a read aloud and they work on word work.
I have a multi-age classroom with first and second grade students.
They are an amazing group of kids who love learning and each other. They always love getting new books. Building our classroom library will allow them more time and more choices with different texts. This is particularly helpful to students whose families can't get them to the library.
My Project
The students will be able to use these books during our reading block. Each student has a book box that they can chose books to go in. These books are at their level so that they can read them independently or with a partner. Having a bigger selection of books will allow them to have better choices. Non-fiction books at their level will really expand their knowledge. Our school does not have a library and some of my students are not able to go to the city library so having a selection of books in the classroom will allow them to get experience with different texts.
As a classroom teacher, I have spent the last 13 years borrowing and buying books.
My class library is very lacking in the area of non-fiction literature. I would like to see my students have more exposure to real world reading. My students will be more knowledgeable and able to expand their understandings about concepts in the world.
