This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm an English III and Survey of African American Writing teacher in a high poverty and Title I school in the Mississippi Delta. Our school serves 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. My students are incredibly passionate and interested in engaging with ideas that impact their lives and their community. Their creativity shines through in their writing. I hope to create a classroom environment that is welcoming and equipped to prepare them to engage with the world and each other.
My Project
The goal of this project is to provide students with books that will be engaging for high school students. Moreover, to help foster a love of reading that will lead to improved literacy and academic achievement. I sat down with several students in my classes to find out what books and genres would get them excited about independent reading and this project is the product of those conversations.
Having access to books they chose in our class library will bring not only growth in reading comprehension and vocabulary, but it will give an opportunity to experience the adventures and joys that a book can offer.
As independent reading can be integral to the educational process, these books will be made available to students, so they may enjoy them in class or at home after checking them out from our library. Please help us make this goal a reality!
