Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Which book changed your life in high school? Help a group of students find joy in reading and literature by funding a growing classroom library.
I teach in a strong neighborhood school in Brooklyn.
My students come from a wide variety of ethnic and academic backgrounds, and in my English classes, I have the widest possible spectrum of students. Over half are Hispanic, and 82% receive free lunch. They range from grades 10-12, and have a huge range of academic abilities. Some of my students will spend next year in competitive universities, and some struggle to find compelling reasons to attend academic classes every day.
As I stated above, I have a wide variety of students in my classroom, from reluctant readers, to avid consumers of young adult fiction, and even mature pre-AP readers who need highly challenging adult texts. I've tried to select a wide variety of reading materials that will engage many of the emerging and growing readers in my classes.
My Project
My tenth grade double period English classes start most days with fifteen minutes of independent reading. Students are allowed to check one book at a time out from our classroom library to take home with them. Students are responsible for book talks and visual reviews once per semester to encourage others to read books they've enjoyed.
Sadly, classroom surveys indicate that few of my students have extensive libraries at home or visit neighborhood libraries regularly. Help me bring engaging literature and a love of reading to them.
When I arrived, I inherited a small, outdated, and somewhat dusty library from a previous teacher.
Many of my books were either age-inappropriate, bland, or falling apart. Please help me make sure that our texts are highly engaging and challenging for all of my students. I want my kids to understand that reading can be not just enlightening, but genuinely enjoyable--even life changing. Your donation can help me do that.
