This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In our school, almost all of our students are first- or second-generation immigrants that came from various East African countries, such as Somalia, in search of better opportunities for their families. The students themselves are joyous, witty, and energetic, and truly have changed my life in the 4 short weeks that I have known them.
As middle schoolers, my students are very enthusiastic and interested in science, particularly in lab experiments.
However, my school does not provide a great deal of lab equipment for the middle school classrooms, preferring to invest our resources in technology. While this is a understandable and justified administrative decision, it leaves my kids without the opportunity to learn and practice basic laboratory skills they need to succeed in upper level science classes.
The enthusiasm and motivation of our students is unparalleled, but without the necessary supplies, we cannot provide them the education they deserve. Your donation will help these students have a fun, engaging year of science.
My Project
These materials are the basic supplies that allow my students to receive the type of education they deserve. The basic technological supplies, such as keyboard and mouses, will allow my student to be able to use the computers that we have available in the classroom. Right now we have computers available in the classroom, but every single keyboard is missing keys or has keys that are stuck. None are fully functional, and all of them limit the students ability to work on the computers. We also only have 5 fully functional computer mouses. Our other mouses are unable to click or scroll. Getting replacements for these basic pieces of technology will allow my students to develop technological literacy and complete assignments that they are unable to complete at home. We also do not have basic classroom supplies like scissors, glue, and colored pencils. These supplies would open the doors for my students to complete creative projects that don't require me to spend the entirety of my savings. Finally, the basic laboratory equipment such as beakers and balances will allow my students to engage in the experiential learning that comes from completing laboratory experiments. The value of experimentation in science cannot be understated and is crucial for students to truly appreciate the knowledge and process of science.
My students are already facing more challenges than most of us can imagine.
As the children of immigrants, they are faced with the daunting responsibility of making their parents sacrifices worth it. These supplies provide the foundation for my students to engage more fully with science and provides opportunities for them to become inspired and develop a love of learning. By assisting us in providing technology, supplies, and laboratory equipment, you can help a student get the education they deserve.
