Builders Wanted: Constructing Castles, Literacy, and Mathematical Understanding
Help me give my students Jumbo Lego Blocks and Castle Blocks to help them in an engaging unit for my special needs students that brings together math, language, and reading that is centered around the theme of castles.
My special education classroom is composed of twelve students representing various disabilities that make learning new information a challenge. All of my students struggle with focus and attention which only serves to compound their need for small group, high-quality, targeted, and highly engaging instruction. Given the nature of my students’ challenges, most spend the majority of their day with our “classroom family” for reading and math instruction.
Regardless, from the second they enter our room to the moment they leave on the bus, my students know they are loved.
I allocate a large amount of time and energy on relationship building, as I see a strong relationship with students as essential for optimal learning to take place. In return, they work hard and courageously make mistakes in an environment that does not penalize failure, but encourages effort. Faculty and staff know if they need a hug, they are always abundant and free in our classroom!
Play-based instruction is very important in teaching my students. So many language, social, and mathematical skills are picked up by children through play. I use this medium to teach students vocabulary, story grammar, math, and much more.
My Project

weave together a general understanding of castles and medieval times with basic literacy and math concepts in an engaging format to bring learning from different areas together under the banner of castle-building.

Jumbo Legos with letters for building CVC words. As the castle grows higher, so will students literacy skills!
High interest read-aloud books on castles to explore the vocabulary and history behind castles and medieval times!
Discussions of area, counting blocks, engineering taller and taller castles using mathematics!
