Help me give my students some shelving to store their block building materials in a safe, user friendly way. This new shelving is sturdy and splinter free, and will help my students organize materials for engineering and cleanup.
My students love to build and create in the block area! These little engineers are always designing new buildings, tunnels, bridges, and communities. These homemade blocks are measured in units (quarters, halves, quads) to naturally foster math relationships through play. We use the block area to create the settings for our writers workshop and readers workshop. It is a springboard into our imaginations. We also use the block area to make our content areas come to life, such as creating maps and zoos (pictured) or by creating buildings from the community we live in. This particular design was created when we were studying animals and their habitats.
The block area is a natural catalyst to our writing workshop time.
Students create designs, add embellishments, create signs, edit, and revise their designs throughout the week. At the end of the week, we photograph a picture of their creation, and the following week they write a "block story" to go along with their design. The signs from the buildings get posted on a word wall for others to use from the following week. Students naturally use the block area to support the content area that we are studying as a class.
My Project
The shelving in our classroom is old, rickety, and, splintering. The shelves wobble and have been taped together with duct tape. We have wonderful materials to build with, but our current shelving is an accident waiting to happen. Funding of this project will allow my students to build and clean up their block designs in a safe and organized manner.
Materials that are clearly displayed entice students to choose them in a natural and organic way.
This shelving would provide each style of block to have its own place on the shelf. These shelves will last a very long time, which would benefit 20 students this year, as well as future students for many more years.
