Builders Gotta Build

Help me give my students hands-on activities that will allow them to build things from everyday items. They will also begin learning to take apart items with the intent of fixing them in the future.

My Students

I teach elementary gifted students in 2nd-5th grade. I have 5 classes, each with 10-13 students. This currently allows me to reach a total of 56 gifted students. We are a Title I school and as a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, I am constantly filling in various gaps for students that have not had life experiences many of us see as "typical".

Our gifted children will be tomorrow’s leaders, scientists, engineers, doctors, entrepreneurs, attorneys, politicians, songwriters, and movie makers; they'll create our future and influence our world, but only if they're able to realize and reach their potential.

It's my goal to teach creative and analytical thinking, work on developing relationships with peers from any background, and to spark curiosity, creativity, imagination, and a love for lifelong learning that goes far beyond that of any classroom while growing beyond what they ever knew was possible.

My Project

Students will learn to CAREFULLY read instructions to build robots. They will also begin learning how to take things apart so they will be able to use their problem-solving skills in to fix and repair small things of theirs that may be broken. This will help them to come up with new and innovative solutions when they run across a roadblock to something they're trying to do. Students these days are quick to use their devices at videos, but they're not as determined to use their resources when they encounter problems themselves. Students will then use everyday items to create something from a list of choices and personalize their creations using paint pens. I hope completing these hands on projects will guide them in the right direction to become the independent, preserving problem solvers I know lies within them.
