Build Toward Awesomeness!

My students need LEGO pieces and building blocks to make their play (and everything else) awesome!

This project expired on March 10, 2017.

My Students

My students often reflect a childhood that many people share when growing up in Queens, NY - they come from self-sacrificing families that immigrated here to work odd jobs and make ends meet, all so they can provide their children with the best of what they can manage. As a result, my kindergartners come into school already with an immense responsibility to uphold.

At four years old, my students are expected to meet standards that state they should be reading full sentences, writing personal narratives, and solving math equations, when in reality, most of them are just learning English.

The academic pressure on these young individuals weighs heavy on their shoulders, and in my heart. Yet, they continue to surprise me with the amazing progress they make between September to June. This can only be a testament of their hard work, and the unwavering support from their loved ones.

Reminiscent to the words from Uncle Ben (*a wink to our native friendly neighborhood Spiderman), I hope to empower these kindergartners so that they see their responsibility as a noble one, and in turn, uncover their inner superheroes to make their families and community proud!

My Project

Building blocks and LEGO pieces are prized toys for any child. The simplicity of the make-up sets a blank canvas for kids to impose their own creative vision and construct.

It is just my luck that my students are particularly interested in this center, when I lack the substantial amount of materials for them to indulge in their interest.

Our blocks area consists of two shelves, with enough pieces for three kids to build for 15 minutes before they run out of blocks, not ideas. They are faced with the choice to tear down one part of the structure to create another part.

The LEGO area is not much better; my students build both imaginative places and realistic models of our neighborhood, but lack the LEGO figurines that would enjoy their creations. On numerous occasions, my students have asked "Where are the people?" in which case I have to shrug and give them paper to create their own. While they try, I see their frustration when their still-developing fine motor skills can't cut paper LEGO people small enough to fit in their houses and castles.

The materials of blocks and LEGO pieces I am asking for my classroom will be used to alleviate the frustration from my students. I know they have so many ideas, but the lack the materials limits their expression. I am so excited to see what my class can create when they finally have the means to do so.
