The students of our school are a cohort of diverse, intelligent, and hardworking students from around the New York City Metropolitan area. Our school is a selective, public, college preparatory school with a focus on science, math, technology, and engineering that provides a challenging academic experience that prepares students for careers in science, math, and engineering.
All of our competitive sports teams (girls soccer, boys, soccer, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading, rugby, girls basketball, and boys basketball) play an important role at our school where students not only represent our school on the field and throughout our community but is also a place where students find a second family that teaches them life skills.
Our students on our competitive sports teams (girls soccer, boys, soccer, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading, rugby, girls basketball, and boys basketball) learn how to manage demanding schedules both with their academics, teams, and home life. They are taught the importance of physical fitness and how to work with others in addition to being a scholar.
My Project
Our school doesn't have the space or funding to have a weight room. As a result, our sports teams (girls soccer, boys soccer, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading, rugby, girls basketball, and boys basketball) are at a disadvantage because they can't train in the best way as other teams who do.
The nearby Sports Club, Town Sports International, has graciously offered our athletes a place to train by providing us a space and the opportunity to use their facilities and equipment.
While they have given us a discount, we still need funds to take us all the way. In this training seminar/class, our athletes from our various competitive sports teams (girls soccer, boys soccer, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading, rugby, girls basketball, and boys basketball) will have the opportunity to learn how to properly and safely work out in order to build strength to help them succeed on the field/floor. They will also learn how to make rigorous workout plans for themselves and their teammates so that everyone on the various teams can grow stronger. In addition, this opportunity will help our various teams build bonds and further strengthen our own community by working out together! Overall we hope that this grant can help close the gap and level the playing field for our athletes.
This was a pilot class in the fall and was extremely successful. We have more athletes than spots available and with this project, we hope that we can increase the number of spots available.
