Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Pre-K is one of the most important grades in a student's school career. More important than learning their basic letters and numbers, they learn to share, use materials, how to behave, etc.
The most important thing they learn is what I like to call "how to school".
Instilling a love for school is my ultimate goal.
To qualify for Pre-K my students need to be either low income or English language learners, most are both. My class is diverse in race, ethnicity, and religion, with students who are Ethiopian, Hindi, Hispanic, etc. We are a special group and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The students learn love and tolerance, respect and responsibility, fun and work.
My Project
Pre-K students learn through hands on exploration, creativity, and play. The construction center is one of the most important centers in my classroom. We build everything, from fire-stations to ant hills, from letters to schools. Whatever our theme is, the students want to build it.
Having a variety of building supplies opens students imaginations, increases their spatial awareness and cooperation, and develops fine and gross motor skills.
Students love new and exciting challenges. Magnet tiles and interlocking bricks are a great way to engage ALL students. Research shows that playing with legos and other building toys grows interest in and success with the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); subjects that are becoming more important and necessary in our increasingly technological world. Students also have to cooperate, think critically, and be creative when using building materials. They create a balanced and enriching educational experience.
